Indiana at a glance

Indiana sits in the Midwestern United States, bordered by Michigan to the north, Ohio to the east, Kentucky to the south, and Illinois to the west. The state was admitted to the Union as the 19th state on December 11, 1816, with Corydon as the original capital before the seat moved to Indianapolis in 1825. Population of about 6.8 million today (2024 estimate), with the Indianapolis metro area accounting for roughly a third of that.

The economy historically anchored on auto manufacturing, steel (Gary's US Steel works), and pharmaceuticals (Eli Lilly is Indianapolis-headquartered). The state's nickname "The Crossroads of America" reflects its position at the convergence of major Interstate corridors (I-65, I-69, I-70, I-74) — a useful geographic detail for music history because it meant touring acts moving between Chicago, Nashville, Detroit, and the East Coast all passed through. Bloomington is home to Indiana University and one of the country's most-respected schools of music.

Why Indiana shows up here

Indiana coverage today is dominated by the metalcore-production lineage: Joey Sturgis's Foundation Recording Studio era. Why this matters to the gear story

The Indiana piece of the gear story is studio-philosophy, not gear-spec. Sturgis's choice of Connersville was practical (lower overhead, longer session blocks at smaller budgets) and ideological (distance from the industry mainstream supported the metalcore generation's anti-major-studio posture). The actual gear decisions — Schecter and Music Man 7-strings, Cobalt 7-string strings at Drop A or Drop G#, ENGL Powerball amps, Sturgis's drum-sample chain — happened in the room regardless of where the room was. But the room being in Indiana is part of why the records sound the way they do.
